Top Actions for World Environment Day

With World Environment Day here again, now is a great time to think about ways that you can improve your quality of life and protect the planet.

1. Eat less meat. It’s good for your health and the planet. Join the Meatless Monday’s campaign supported by people like Sir Paul McCartney, Ricky Gervais, Moby, Yoko Ono, Bryan Adams, Sir Richard Branson, Sheryl Crow, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin and Michael Pollan. See http://meatlessmondays-australia.com for ideas and recipes.

2. Save money with less wasted food. Australians waste up 30% of the food we buy, at a cost of $5 billion per year. So save money, your health and the planet!

3. Call/write your politician and say you want a deposit on bottles and containers so your kids will take them back to the shop!

4. Make your travel your exercise and save money. Ride your bike to work once a week. Do the shopping on foot. Exercise makes you happier. Shopping doesn’t.

5. Have fun with low environmental impact. Spend more time at the beach or in the park playing games with friends and family. Free, healthy and makes your happier!

6. Reduce the emissions in your house. Turn down the heating. Ditch the second fridge. Wash clothes in cold water and use the clothesline. Enjoy the sunshine.

7. Connecting to people is good but do so with care for the planet. Fly less, phone more.

8. Buy less. While it’s important to buy green, its even better not to buy. We all have so much stuff we don’t use. Organise a clothes swap event. Even more money saved!

9. Next car you buy, think fuel economy. There’s some very efficient and snazzy cars around and picking the right one can save you money and a tonne of CO2 emissions per year!

10. Buy 100% green power for your home. This is an easy step and can cut your CO2 emissions by many tonnes per year. It cost more but if you cut your energy use it mightn’t cost you anything.

  1. Donald Ridley says:

we do need to watch our waste….so many things we can improve on. So much rubbish in the world. And how about the amount of paper we throw out….newspapers, junk mail, office paper….and how about phone books. I can’t believe Telstra still prints them. Does Telstra know that whitepages.com.au has it all. No need!

Start in your own backyard Telstra….please!
