The politics of Climate Change
Jul 23
What do you think of Julia Gillard’s announcement to engage a people’s assembly on climate change and a new expert panel? Do we need more consultation or as argued by some, have we had enough of that already with Garnaut and countless other enquiries.
Meanwhile, as argued by Giles Parkinson in Climate Spectator, China is racing ahead to act on climate, closing dirty factories and not worrying much about consultation at all.
Maybe the fear of losing economic advantage to China in the new low carbon economy will get more attention from our politicians than fear of losing the Great Barrier Reef!

How is this Updated?
Paul – the time for consensus is well passed. And we have had ample science though we should continue to examine it. I think you have a point – once Australians see the economic loss faced by being unable to compete with China, they’ll get behind strong carbon action. The proposed policy (Citizen’s Assembly) before us, however, locks in a lag time (to gauge people’s responses) for the government to act which maybe too late.
